Bone Grafting Q&A:

What is bone grafting?

Bone grafting at Anna M. Munné, DDS, PA & ASSOCIATES uses your bone tissue, donated bone, or synthetic bone to replace jawbone tissues destroyed by gum disease. It promotes bone regrowth to restore tooth stability and reduce the chance of future problems. Newer technology stimulates your body’s ability to regenerate bone at a fast rate.

What are the benefits of bone grafting?

The main benefit you can take advantage of after undergoing bone grafting is the ability to receive dental implants in the future. The implants anchor bridges, crowns, and dentures to replace missing permanent teeth and perfect the appearance of your smile. Having a strong jawbone also reduces the risk of permanent tooth loss.

Is bone grafting right for me?

After discussing your symptoms and oral health history, Dr. Munné lets you know if bone grafting is for you. She also takes dental X-rays and examines your teeth and gums. If you have significant bone loss due to gum disease and desire dental implants, or you simply want to reduce the chance of permanent tooth loss in the future, bone grafting may be for you.

You must make arrangements for someone to drive you home after the procedure if you plan to take a sedative.

What should I expect during bone grafting?

Before surgery, Dr. Munné numbs the treatment area and offers you a sedative to relax you. During the treatment, she makes a tiny incision in your gums, moves the gum tissue away from the bone, and cleans and disinfects the area.

Dr. Munné then adds bone grafting materials to your jawbone to increase its volume and strengthen it. She may cover it with a specialized membrane for added protection before positioning gum tissue back into place and closing the incisions.

What happens after bone grafting?

Common side effects after bone grafting include tenderness, swelling, and bruising, but these diminish after a few days. Take medicines as directed by Dr. Munné. Bone fragments, which look like grains of salt, may come out of the treatment site for a few days during the healing process.

After bone grafting is complete, you might be a candidate for dental implants or other restorative oral health treatments.
