Wisdom Teeth Extraction in Bellaire & Houston
One of the most commonly performed procedures in dentistry is the extraction of third molars, more commonly known as wisdom teeth. Dentists, periodontists and oral surgeons perform 10 million wisdom teeth extraction procedures from about 5 million people in the United States each year.
Third molars are usually the last four of 32 teeth to erupt in the mouth, generally making their appearance between the ages of 17 and 25. They are located at the back corners of the mouth (top and bottom), near the entrance to the throat. They are called wisdom teeth because they surface at a time typically associated with increased maturity or “wisdom.” In most cases, inadequate space in the mouth does not allow the wisdom teeth to erupt properly and become fully functional. When this happens, wisdom teeth can become impacted (stuck) in an undesirable or potentially harmful position. If left untreated, impacted wisdom teeth can contribute to infection, damage to other teeth and possibly cysts or tumors.
Dr. Munné often performs the preventive removal of wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth can cause crowding and upset proper bite mechanics and chewing function, especially in people with smaller, narrower jaws. A dentist, a periodontist or an oral surgeon typically performs wisdom teeth extraction. To prevent potential future problems, some periodontists recommend wisdom teeth extraction even if impacted wisdom teeth aren’t causing problems for the patient.
